World’s prominent mathematicians gathered in Shanghai for the 2024 International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians, opened at Fudan University

January 3 , the 2024 Annual International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians ( ICCM ) opened in Xianghui Hall, Fudan University, Shanghai, marking the second time that this grand event of the global Chinese mathematics community has been held in Shanghai, an international metropolis. This year's conference, with the theme of " New Frontiers : Mathematics for Transforming Science and Humanity " , brought together Chinese mathematicians from around the world to witness this major event. At the opening ceremony, it was announced that the ICCM headquarter will be permanently located in Shanghai, housed at the Shanghai Institute of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences (SIMIS) to create a communication and exchange platform for top international scientists.

At the opening ceremony, Liu Kefeng, a deputy director of SIMIS, served as the host. He reviewed the important achievements of the institute in the past year since its establishment and emphasized the importance of the institute in building a high-level research platform in basic mathematics, applied mathematics, artificial intelligence and other fields.

Academician Shing-Tung Yau, President of the ICCM and Chairman of SIMIS mentioned in his speech: " I founded the ICCM between 1996 and 1998. " Professor Yau said in his speech that the ICCM has trained many important young scholars who have become academicians and promising mathematicians. Professor Yau also emphasized the increasingly important position of Chinese mathematicians in the international mathematics community and China's achievements in training first-class scholars.

In her speech, Ms. Liu Duo, Vice Mayor of Shanghai, said, " Shanghai will continue to increase its efforts to fully support research in the field of mathematics. We will strive to build a major center for mathematical research, steadily advance the construction of a pilot zone for basic research, and encourage mathematicians to target major scientific problems with high risks and high values. " She emphasized that " mathematics is the foundation of all sciences and an important tool for the development of human civilization , " and looked forward to Shanghai's future development in the field of mathematical research.

Academician Ma Yugang, member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and vice president of Fudan University, also expressed his support for the ICCM Annual Meeting and stressed that " Fudan will continue to provide parent support for the development of the institute in the future. We sincerely welcome more and more talents in mathematics-related interdisciplinary fields and friends who have a strong interest in mathematics to choose the Shanghai Institute of Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Sciences and Fudan University.
